I was cycle touring Ísland with my son for 3 months a Skógafoss Íslandnd we cycled the ring road and crossed the centre from East to North and North to South. And of course cycling the ring road it is impossible to miss Skógafoss. But that is just the first waterfall in a series of 30 waterfalls all spectacular. New drawings from my 3 month cycle touring artist in residence in Iceland

New drawings from my 3 month cycle touring artist in residence in Iceland

I will be adding drawings to this blog post over the next days and posting larger art works as they are finished to future blog post’s . These are from Askja in the Vatnajokull national park. We cycled across Iceland twice, and if you are not aware then know that there are no shops …. no convenience stores ….. no fuel stations …. no bus stops ….. no trains …. we took with us enough food supplies to last us 10 day’s and we got it just about right …. on our eleventh day as we rejoined the ring road we had a couple of cupa soups to keep us going until we reached a campsite. Water was no problem though. You can drink from almost any stream or river in Iceland

Aurora photographed 6th November 2023 Brechiek Ynysek Syllan

Ever since I first saw the Aurora in Iceland in August and September 2023 while cycle touring for three months in Iceland I have taken every oportunity to observe and photograph the Aurora. Seeing them is just amazing and has been a life long dream and as we approach solar maximum I have seen them from Tresco and Brechiek Ynysek Syllan several times. Not as dramatic as they were in Iceland but to see them this far South ….. several times is quite extraordinary.

This image was taken using my mobile phone hand held and braced upon a dry stone wall. I set the camera to ISO 3200 and set to a 30 second exposure. This was taken just a few minutes walk from my home.

…. This next one was taken on the same night using the same settings 6th November 2023 at 21:16:25 pm ….

…. Now to start some new Aurora paintings …

The artwork is a response to nature, painted outside and finished in the studio. The painting explores our connection with nature, more than that, it explores landscape and seascape in the broader context of how weather systems develop that the sun drives the climate, It is about interconnection, philosophically it is an attempt to impress upon the viewer that we are not a separate creation from nature. That our consiousness, our self awareness evolved out of the same laws of nature that govern the evolution of the universe. From this philosophical point of view arises the paradigm that consciousness is the universe becoming self aware, holding a metaphorical mirror up to itself and asking the question what am I ….. Then the choice of how we treat nature arises. As we are nature it is in reality about how we treat nature, each other and ourselves. It teachers us about our fundamental responsibility to nature.
