New painting – first in a new series about my cycle tour of Iceland

Reynisfjara black sand beach Iceland Oil on canvas 90×180 cm 2023, íslenska hjólaferð

Reynisfjara black sand beach Island was an amazing place. We camped close by and went to have a look at the basalt column cliffs, The sand was as fine as any sand but eroded from the basalt cliffs, the stricking contracts at all time of the day was just wonderful. This painting concentrates on looking into the storm from the shore, there will be many more which will feature the basalt columns and the basalt sea stacks ……. Oh and this first painting ….. is the small one

New painting …….

The sun converts 600 million tons of hydrogen into 596 million tons of helium every second, releasing energy at the mass energy conversion rate of 4.26 million metric tons per second. Oil on canvas 76×152 cm. 2020.

The artwork is a response to nature, painted outside and finished in the studio. The painting explores our connection with nature, more than that, it explores landscape and seascape in the broader context of how weather systems develop that the sun drives the climate, It is about interconnection, philosophically it is an attempt to impress upon the viewer that we are not a separate creation from nature. That our consiousness, our self awareness evolved out of the same laws of nature that govern the evolution of the universe. From this philosophical point of view consciousness is the universe becoming self aware, holding a metaphorical mirror up to itself and asking the question what am I ….. Then the choice of how we treat nature arises. As we are nature it is in reality about how we treat ourselves, each other and nature.
…. The choice is yours ….
