‘Welcome – To The Desert – Ódáðahraun desert – Vatnajökull National Park Ísland’. Graphite and oil on card height 71 cm x Width 402 cm. £3800
This huge drawing …. and huge is the only response I coud have, the only direction I could possibly take when creating artwork about the interior of Ísland. There are no shops here…no convenience stores, no petrol stations, no buses, trains, taxi’s no comfy hotels, if you are daft enough to drive here you will need a proper 4×4 and you had better get yourself a good one, this is where cycling comes into it’s own far far superior to any car. In cycle touring to Askja we had to crossed 14 proper rivers, one in particular was very memorable ….. we both have 100% waterproof pannier bags two at the front, two at the back and being waterproof they acted like flotation bags …. at one point we were up to our waists in the river with the current trying to take our bikes from us because the pannier bags were almost allowing our bikes to float ….. this is proper expedition cycle touring and we took with us on each crossing 10 days worth of food so that we could take some time to explore this beautiful, sublime place. My son and I crossed Island twice during our 3 month cycle tour, and cycling through the centre was the most extraordinary cycle touring experience of my life. One thing we did not need to carry water. The water in almost all of Ísland’s rivers is pure and safe to drink.
So few of us have the opportunity to experience this kind of isolation, in places the tracks ….. there are no roads …… almost completely disapear …. merging into the vast ash fields and lava plains. And still there is life here, small pockets of wild flowers, and once or twice we heard Ravens calling in the distance, it was wonderful.
This drawing is composed of 10 A2 pressed and prepared panels, the whole drawing measures just over 4 meters wide (71×402 cm) ….. and for me this is minimal size, I have more and larger ones planned.
